Packing your hospital bag can feel overwhelming.

You’ll see long lists telling you to bring everything. When the moment actually comes, you don’t want to be digging through an overstuffed suitcase while you’re in labor.

After going through it myself, I realized something simple:

You don’t need more—you need smarter.

That’s why I used what I call the two-bag method. It made everything feel so much calmer. It felt organized and actually usable.

Want to keep this simple? I linked everything I personally used in my hospital bag here:

The Two-Bag Method (This Made Everything Easier)

Instead of one giant bag, I split everything into two separate bags:

1. Labor & Delivery Bag (Backpack)

This is the bag that stays with you during labor.

Think: comfort, quick access, and essentials only.

You don’t want to be digging for things while you’re having contractions—this bag keeps everything within reach.

2. Postpartum Bag (Duffle)

This stays packed until after baby arrives. You can even leave it in the car until you move rooms. We did this and after baby and I were settled, my husband went to the car and brought it in.

Once you’re settled into recovery, this is when you’ll actually want your clothes, toiletries, and baby items.

What I Packed in My Labor & Delivery Bag

This was a simple backpack—and honestly, it was perfect.

Essentials for Labor

  • Snacks
  • Drinks
  • Tumbler / water cup
  • Long phone charger
  • Hairbrush
  • Hair ties
  • Chapstick

Comfort Items

  • Labor & delivery gown
  • Grippy socks

One “Just for Fun” Item

  • Nerf gun (yes, really 😂 — I used it to wake dad up after my epidural)

This bag stayed small, easy to manage, and had everything I actually needed in the moment.

What I Packed in My Postpartum Bag

This was a small duffle bag with just the essentials—nothing extra.

For Baby

  • Receiving blankets
  • One soft/snuggly blanket
  • 1 burp cloth
  • Onesies with built-in mittens

For Me

  • 2 nursing bras
  • Breast pads
  • 2 sets of comfy hospital pajamas
  • Shower shoes
  • 2 extra pairs of grippy socks
  • Toiletries

Don’t Forget

  • Car seat installed before you leave for the hospital

What You Don’t Need to Pack

This is where you can save space (and your sanity).

Most hospitals provide:

  • Diapers
  • Wipes
  • Nipple cream
  • Postpartum care items

I personally left all of that at home—and I’m glad I did.

Final Thoughts (From One Mom to Another)

You don’t need a perfectly packed hospital bag.

You don’t need everything TikTok tells you to bring.

You just need to feel comfortable, prepared, and supported.

The two-bag method helped me stay calm, organized, and focused on what actually mattered—meeting my baby.

And that’s the only thing you should be thinking about in that moment 🤍
