Summer Reading Challenge: Fun, Easy & Screen-Free for Kids
Summer is the perfect time to build a love of reading while keeping those brains active (and fighting off summer brain rot!). We started a family Summer Reading Challenge last year and it was such a hit that we’re doing it again.
Here’s how we set it up — simple, flexible, and fun for school-age kids:
Why Do a Summer Reading Challenge?
- Keeps kids engaged without screens
- Improves reading skills without feeling like “school”
- Creates sweet memories and quiet time (especially during 110°+ Arizona days)
- You can reward effort, not just pages read
Our Simple Summer Reading Challenge Rules
- Set a Goal – Examples:
- Read 10 books
- Read for 20 minutes per day
- Read 500 total pages
- Make It Visual – Use a big chart on the fridge or a printable tracker. Let kids color in stars or move a character up a ladder as they finish books.
- Rewards System (Kids love this!)
- 5 books = Ice cream date
- 10 books = Small toy or extra screen time
- Finish the challenge = Trip to the library or a new book
Age-Appropriate Ideas
- Little Kids (Ages 4–7): Picture books, early readers, and bedtime read-alouds
- School Age (Ages 8–12): Chapter books, graphic novels, and fun series
- Whole Family: Pick one book to read together
Arizona Summer Reading Tips
- Set up a cozy reading nook indoors with the AC
- Take books outside during early morning or evening
- Use the library’s free summer reading programs
Book Recommendations & Tools We Love
- Junie B. Jones and Magic Tree House boxed sets
- Fun beaded bookmarks
- Incentive charts and stickers
- Kindle Kids- great if you don’t have a large capacity to store books!
Final Thoughts
A Summer Reading Challenge doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is to make reading fun and consistent. My kids actually look forward to it now!
